If you were previously enrolled (registered) in a U.S. institution under F-1 immigration status and plan to enroll at New Jersey Institute of Technology, you must notify the Department of Homeland Security through the U.S.Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). You may do this either by entering the U.S. with New Jersey Institute of Technology’s I-20 or, if you do not plan to leave the U.S. before attending New Jersey Institute of Technology, have the Office of International Students & Faculty (OIS&F) notify USCIS of your change of institutions. If you are admitted to the U.S. with NJIT’s I-20, it will be stamped by an immigration inspector. If you do not leave the U.S., you will change institutions, and USCIS will be notified through the detailed procedures which follow.
New Jersey Institute of Technology is required to verify that you were properly enrolled at your previous institution when you enroll with us. Please note that USCIS must be notified of the transfer within the first 30 days of the start of the semester. Failure to comply with this regulation has serious consequences; it will result in you being "in violation of status" and necessitate a reinstatement application to USCIS.
Please follow the procedures listed below: - Notify the designated school official (DSO) at the school in which you are currently enrolled of your intention to transfer. Tell the DSO you wish to transfer to NJIT and discuss the "transfer out" date from your school.
- Ask the DSO at your school to mail or fax the NJIT Transfer Verification Form to the NJIT Office of Admissions.
- Request an I-20 from NJIT. Please note that this I-20 can only be issued AFTER the "transfer out" date.
Within 15 days of your registration at NJIT, submit the following documents at the reception desk of the Office of International Students & Faculty:
- Passport copy, including biographical (with photograph and expiration date) and visa pages.
- Copy of the I-94 card (front and back).
- Copy of the I-20 from NJIT.
- Copy of I-20(s) from your previous school(s).
- Complete NJIT SEVIS Data Collection Form.
Upon review of the above documents and your registration as a full-time student (12 credits), the OIS&F staff will approve your transfer if appropriate. We will notify USCIS that the transfer has been completed by updating your SEVIS record, and printing a new I-20, which will show on page 1 that the transfer was completed. Please check for this notation on the I-20 when you come in to pick it up. If the OIS&F staff is unable to approve the transfer, you will be required to apply to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for reinstatement.
