What Information About Me is in My Initial SEVIS Record?

By August 1, 2003, all continuing NJIT international students and scholars will be entered into SEVIS. Many international students and scholars have inquired about the kinds of information that will be contained in their initial SEVIS record. Your record will contain all of the information that is on your I-20 or DS-2019, as well as your permanent address in your home country, your local address, your passport number, the name of the visa issuing post that issues your student visa, as well as the visa number and the visa issue date, the location of the U.S. port of entry where your immigration inspection takes place, and your date of entry. If you have any dependents either applying for an F-2 or J-2 visa, or already in the United States in F-2 or J-2 status, they will have a SEVIS record connected to yours, containing their name, date of birth, country of birth and country of citizenship, gender, and relationship to you.

At NJIT only the Admissions Office and the Office of International Students and Faculty have access to your SEVIS record, either to create it or update it, and access is password protected.

Once an initial SEVIS record is created, there are a number of options to update the record or send a notification to USCIS.

The updates include:
  • work authorization
  • adding or updating dependent information
  • updating financial, personal, or program information

The notifications include:

  • authorization to drop below a full-time course load
  • program completion
  • disciplinary action by school
  • program extension
  • confirmation of registration
  • shorten program
  • terminate record
  • transfer out to new school

The OIS&F will continue to publish information on SEVIS. We encourage you to send your SEVIS questions to international.students@njit.edu.
