H-1B

H-1B is a non-immigrant, temporary worker status.

You may be granted H-1B status for six (6) years; a maximum for three (3) years may be granted at one time.  Shorter periods can also be approved.

To gain H-1B status, you may enter the U.S. using an H-1B visa, or you may seek it by petitioning the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.   The organization or company wishing to employ you petitions for the status.

H-1B has dual intent.  It is a non-immigrant status, from which the H-1B status holder can seek permanent residency in the U.S.
